Legionella Risk Assessment

A legionella risk assessment is an important management process that will help to protect you, your employees and your organisation from harm. It is also a legal requirement of the Health & Safety Executive specifically identified in their Approved Code of Practice and guidance L8 "Legionnaires' disease. The control of legionella bacteria in water systems".

Identification and assessment of the risk

"A suitable and sufficient assessment must be carried out to identify and assess the risk of exposure to legionella bacteria from work activities and water systems on the premises and any precautionary measures needed ..."

Paragraph 28. Health & Safety Executive Approved Code of Practice and guidance L8 "Legionnaires' disease. The control of legionella bacteria in water systems"

What is a Legionella Risk Assessment?

A legionella risk assessment is a systematic examination of the potential risks presented by engineered water systems, and seeks to identify and assess the risks of exposure to legionella bacteria from work activities and water systems.

Although it is impossible to guarantee that pathogenic micro-organisms such as legionella bacteria will not exist in engineered water systems, through proactive risk management and control procedures it is possible to significantly reduce the factors that allow those responsible bacteria to proliferate.
