What is a Legionella Risk Assessment?
We all recognise the importance of health and safety risk assessments in the workplace. Some assessments are more specific than others, however. A legionella risk assessment is a good example of this.
What is a legionella risk assessment?
The main objective of a legionella risk assessment is to identify the potential risks that may be present in certain water systems so that the health and wellbeing of staff, visitors and other people is protected. Since the bacteria can contaminate any man-made water system (domestic plumbing systems, taps, showers, spa pools, cooling towers etc.), the person responsible for health and safety (or another duty holder or responsible person) must make sure the bacteria remain at safe levels. This entails identification of the risks, proper management and firm controls.
Can you do the risk assessment yourself?
You can carry out this type of risk assessment yourself, but it is very important to make sure you know what you are doing and you perform the assessment in the proper manner. If you are unaware of all the steps that should be followed, or you do not approach the legionella assessment in the right way, you may assume you have done everything necessary. However, this may not necessarily be the case, and the chance of Legionella bacteria spreading within your water systems could be very real, with the chance that people could become exposed to this potentially deadly bacteria.
This is why many organisations choose to bring in an outside company, specialist in such matters, to handle the risk assessment process on their behalf. This has several advantages, not least the fact you can be certain you have experts performing an assessment who have considerable experience in completing legionella risk assessments with total success.
