It is ideal for facilities management technicians, caretakers, housekeepers, building managers, plumbers, maintenance and engineering contractors, and those with responsibility for the routine monitoring, inspection and maintenance of hot and cold water systems.
Learning Outcomes
This practical Legionella control and ACOP L8 compliance focused course will give candidates a brief overview of the current regulatory framework and those steps required to achieve compliance with the law.
This course will also help candidates identify the risks presented by Legionella bacteria in hot and cold water systems.
They will also learn where, when and how to take accurate hot and cold water temperatures; flush little used outlets, clean and disinfect showerheads, maintain TMVs, inspect water tanks and calorifiers, and carry-out other important Legionella compliance tasks.
Course Pre-Qualification Requirements
None, although some knowledge of health and safety law, hot and cold water systems and issues dealing with the control of legionella would be of benefit.
Training Course Content
Theory
This Legionella training course starts with a brief overview of common waterborne pathogens found in hot and cold water systems including legionella and pseudomonas, the conditions that allow these bugs to grow and the consequences of getting things wrong.
It also outlines current legislation, codes of practice and guidance including COSHH, HSE’s ACOP L8, HSG274 and HTM 04-01 and what’s required at a practical level to comply with the law.
It also reviews the impact of poor maintenance and system design on risk, and discusses the alternative methods of control including temperature, filtration, ultra-violet and chemical disinfection.
Practical
There are a number of practical training modules available that include:
Temperature monitoring
Learn where, when and how to accurately take and record hot and cold water temperatures (including healthcare environments).
Flushing of outlets
Learn about little used outlets and why they are problematic. Learn how frequently they should be reviewed and how to flush an outlet safely.
Vessel inspections
Learn when and how to visually inspect cold water storage tanks, calorifiers and other important items of plant and equipment, what to look for and what steps to take to resolve common problems.
Shower heads
Learn when and how to inspect, clean and disinfect shower heads safely.
Spray taps
Learn when and how to inspect, clean and disinfect spray taps safely.
TMVs
Learn when and how to inspect, clean, disinfect, test and maintain TMVs to achieve safe operation.
Dead legs
Learn how to identify high risk dead legs in pipework and what to do to eliminate the risk.
Legionella sampling
Learn how to take Legionella water samples for analysis in a laboratory. Learn about the test procedure, accuracy, how long it takes and how to interpret the final test results.
Dip slides
Learn how to use dip slides to monitor cooling tower waters in accordance with the HSE’s ACOP L8. Learn how to test water using a dip slide, how to incubate the slides, measure bacteria growth, understand action levels and how to safely dispose of used slides.
Chemical dosing
Learn how to perform basic water analysis and testing, and how to interpret the results so as to monitor, control and manage the consequences of scale, corrosion, bio-fouling and suspended solids.
End test
Assessment and end test of competence.
Discussion and feedback
Certification & CPD
On successful completion of this course candidates will receive a City & Guilds “Certificate of Attainment” for this course. The course also qualifies for 7 hours CPD inall associated subjects and this is recorded on the certificate issued following successful completion of the course.
This certificate should be retained as evidence of formal training in this subject.
