Health & Safety Executive on temperature control of water
The Health & Safety Executive in their legionella related Approved Code of Practice (ACOP) L8 state that the risk from exposure to legionella bacteria should normally be controlled by measures which do not allow the growth of Legionella bacteria in water systems which include avoiding water temperatures between 20 oC and 45 oC, that favour the growth of legionella and other microorganisms.
What do hot & cold water temperatures need to be?
To comply with current UK law concerning the control of legionella your hot and cold water temperatures need to be monitored monthly and should meet the following standards.
Cold water temperatures
The cold water temperature of your systems should be below 20 oC after running the cold water for up to two minutes, and should be measured and formally recorded on a monthly basis.
Hot water temperatures
The hot water temperature should be at least 50 oC within a minute of running the hot water (55 oC in healthcare), and should be measured and formally recorded on a monthly basis.
Hot Water Calorifier Temperatures
For water leaving and returning to a calorifier (water heater), the outgoing water should be at least 60 oC, and the return at least 50 oC (55 oC in healthcare), and should be measured and formally recorded on a monthly basis.
