Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Training: Managing Pseudomonas in Augmented Care

LCA 7000 is a City & Guilds accredited one day classroom based Pseudomonas training course designed specifically for candidates who require an introduction to the control of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in augmented care, hospitals and other healthcare premises.

This course provides practical guidance covering the requirements set out in the Department of Health’s Health Technical Memorandum HTM 04-01 Part C: Pseudomonas aeruginosa, advice for augmented care units.

Who Should Attend this Pseudomonas Training Course?

This Pseudomonas course is ideal for candidates who require an introduction to the control of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in augmented care, hospitals and other healthcare premises in accordance with Health Technical Memorandum HTM 04-01.

Typical candidates will be healthcare facilities managers, infection prevention and control staff, members of the hospital Water Safety Group, design engineers, contractors and those involved in the day to day operation and management of healthcare premises.

Learning Outcomes

The course will give candidates an understanding of the bacteria Pseudomonas, including P. aeruginosa; its occurrence, ecology, transmission, medical conditions associated with infection, and those most at-risk in the population.

This course will also help candidates understand the regulatory environment and recognised guidance, together with the role of the Water Safety Group and Estates, Nursing, Infection Prevention and Control, Medical, and Domestic Facilities departments in the management, control and minimisation of risks associated with Pseudomonas contamination.

Additionally, candidates will develop an understanding of how to assess and pro-actively control / minimise those risks in accordance with HTM 04-01 Part C, including the Pseudomonas risk assessment process, good design considerations, sampling methods, cleaning protocols and the management of equipment.

The course also qualifies for 7 hours CPD in all associated subjects and this is recorded on the Certificate of Attainment issued 7 hours CPD Pseudomonas trainingfollowing successful completion of the course.

Course Pre-Qualification Requirements

None, although prior knowledge of infection control procedures and issues associated with good water hygiene in healthcare environments would be of benefit.

Course Content

  • Introduction.
  • Introduction to Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
  • Clinical understanding of Pseudomonas, diseases and those most at risk.
  • Pseudomonas in the environment.
  • A review of the regulatory environment and recognized guidance concerning the control of Pseudomonas in healthcare premises, including the Health & Safety at Work Act, Control of Substances Hazardous to Health and HTM 04-01.
  • The role of the Water Safety Group and other specialists.
  • Minimising the risk through effective management and control measures.
  • Understanding the risk assessment process.
  • Good design and installation considerations.
  • Contamination control and effective hygiene.
  • Sampling for Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
  • End-test.
  • Discussion and feedback.

Assessment

This course concludes with a multiple choice end-test covering the course content identified above, duration 30 minutes.

The success threshold is 70%.

Certification

On successful completion of this course candidates can receive a City & Guilds “Certificate of Attainment” titled “Managing 7 hours CPD Pseudomonas trainingPseudomonas Aeruginosa in Healthcare Premises” – LCA 7000. The course also qualifies for 7 hours CPD in all associated subjects and this is recorded on the certificate issued following successful completion of the course.

This certificate should be retained as evidence of formal training in this subject.
