With the correct management controls and procedures in place you can help to ensure the health and safety of tenants, employees and others is protected. However, the consequences of getting it wrong can be serious, particularly for those individuals involved with an outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease, including the responsible organisation, its staff and those affected.

What UK health & safety laws govern the control of legionella?

Our legionella checklist deals with compliance under the Health & Safety Executive’s Approved Code of Practice ACOP L8 – “Legionnaires’ disease: The control of legionella bacteria in water systems”, and HSG274. This ACOP L8, often simply referred to as “L8” forms the basis around which the control of legionella related risks are managed. It is enforceable under the following legislation:

  • Management of Health & Safety at Work Regulations 1999
  • Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002
  • Health & Safety at Work Act 1974
